NAIROBI, Kenya — The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) will return to Nakuru County on Sunday, September 6, 2026, for a series of rallies, days after an earlier party engagement in the county was disrupted by an attack reportedly involving people believed to be goons.
DCP Secretary for Planning and Economic Affairs Peter Mbae announced on Wednesday that Nyandarua Senator John Methu and the party’s national team would return to the county for a church service and grassroots mobilisation activities.
Mbae said the team would begin with a church service at Solai Centre before holding rallies at Solai Centre, Mailikumi and Mailisita.
He said planned visits to Subukia, Kabazi, Lanet Umoja and Dundori would be conducted at a later date.
“Nakuru, we are back to Subukia and Bahati that H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, EGH was not able to cover last time with Kaba Methu leading DCP PARTY team. We do Church at Solai then rallies at Solai Centre, Mailikumi and Mailisita. Subukia, Kabazi, Lanet Umoja and Dundori centres, we will visit next time. ONE STEP AT A TIME!” Mbae said in a statement shared on social media.
Return follows disrupted Nakuru tour
The planned return comes days after Methu’s previous engagement in Nakuru was disrupted following an attack on the DCP team.
The circumstances surrounding the incident and the identities or affiliations of those responsible remain subject to clarification.
The latest decision to return to the county signals that the party intends to continue its grassroots mobilisation despite the disruption.
Methu and other DCP officials have in recent weeks stepped up political activities in different parts of the country as the party seeks to expand its support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
DCP targets Nairobi traders
The party is also stepping up its engagement with business communities.
Methu is scheduled to lead a DCP team in a meeting with traders and members of the business community in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Wednesday, September 2.
According to an announcement published on the party’s social media platforms, Methu will be accompanied by DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala and several Nairobi MPs aligned with the party.
The delegation is expected to include Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje and Starehe MP Amos Mwago, who is listed as the host.
Kamukunji MP Hassan Yusuf, who recently joined DCP after leaving the Jubilee Party, is also expected to participate.
The engagement comes against the backdrop of recent demonstrations by traders in Nairobi’s CBD over the cost of imported goods.
Traders protest higher import costs
Traders have protested what they describe as increased taxation and customs costs affecting imported goods.
Some traders have claimed that the cost of clearing a container, previously estimated at about Sh2.5 million, had risen to approximately Sh4.2 million following changes associated with the 2026 Finance Bill.
The demonstrations have resulted in arrests and the use of tear gas by police as authorities attempted to disperse protesters.
The concerns over import costs have provided opposition parties with an opportunity to engage traders and present themselves as advocates for businesses facing higher operating expenses.
The DCP has not indicated whether the Nairobi engagement will include specific policy proposals on the traders’ grievances.
Gachagua leaves DCP team to continue mobilisation
The Nakuru and Nairobi activities come as DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua undertakes a month-long tour of the United States.
Before his departure, Gachagua left the party’s grassroots activities in the hands of his senior officials, including Malala and Methu, who have continued organising events across the country.
Methu has since led meet-the-people tours in areas including Laikipia as the party seeks to strengthen its grassroots networks.
The DCP leadership has also been expanding its political presence through the recruitment of elected leaders and engagement with communities outside its traditional support base.
Hassan Yusuf joins DCP
The party’s Nairobi mobilisation has also been boosted by the defection of Kamukunji MP Hassan Yusuf from Jubilee.
Methu had announced plans for a tour of Nairobi to formally welcome Yusuf into the party.
The programme was expected to begin in Kamukunji before expanding to other parts of Nairobi County.
Yusuf’s move gives DCP an elected parliamentary presence in the capital and provides the party with an opportunity to build relationships with Nairobi’s large trading and business community.
DCP intensifies 2027 preparations
The latest activities point to an intensification of DCP’s grassroots mobilisation as political parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
With Gachagua away in the United States, Methu and Malala have taken a more visible role in the party’s public engagements.
The planned return to Nakuru will test the party’s ability to resume political activities after the disruption of its previous visit.
For DCP, the strategy is increasingly focused on county-level mobilisation, engagement with traders and businesses, and expanding its network of elected leaders as it seeks to establish itself as a significant political force ahead of the next general election.
