Kenya Reports No New Ebola Cases, 108 Contacts Quarantined

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya has recorded no new Ebola cases since confirming its first imported case five days ago, the Ministry of Health says.

In an update issued Sunday, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said all 122 contacts linked to the patient had been listed and verified.

Of these, 108 are in quarantine and are being monitored daily.

None has developed symptoms so far, while tracing of the remaining contacts continues.

The Ministry said 293 samples from 289 alerts had been tested, with only the confirmed case returning a positive result.

More than 667,000 travellers have been screened at 26 points of entry, including 2,345 in the 24 hours before the update.

The confirmed case involved a Kenyan who had travelled from the Democratic Republic of the Congo through Uganda.

The patient died on October 5 and was buried the following day safely, according to the Ministry.

Kenya confirmed the imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease on October 6.

Ministry says response teams remain on standby

Five laboratories are testing samples, including mobile facilities at the Busia and Lwakhakha border points.

The Ministry said up to 241 isolation beds are available in hospitals in Nairobi, Eldoret and Mombasa, including 50 intensive care beds at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

It added that 4,917 health workers have received training in Ebola management, while 343 trained responders are on standby.

The Ministry said there were no restrictions on travel, trade, transport or public gatherings and no lockdown was in place.

Airports, seaports and border points were operating normally with enhanced health screening.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person, or with materials contaminated by those fluids, according to the World Health Organization.

The Ministry urged Kenyans to remain calm, follow official health updates and seek care promptly if they develop symptoms or are concerned about possible exposure.

It said the public could call its toll-free line, 719, for information and guidance.
