Police Arrest Suspected M-Pesa Fraudster in Garissa

Date:

GARISSA, Kenya- Police have arrested a man suspected of defrauding M-Pesa shop attendants in Garissa town and neighbouring areas by posing as a Safaricom agent.

The suspect, identified by police as Edwin Mugoi, was arrested shortly after an M-Pesa attendant in the Posta area of Bulla Hodhan reported losing control of a mobile phone line and money.

According to police, Mugoi approached the attendant and presented himself as a Safaricom agent offering to upgrade the shop’s mobile line.

Police said the suspect used the interaction to swap the line before transferring money from the affected account to another account.

Officers attached to Garissa Police Station launched an operation and arrested Mugoi shortly after the incident.

A search conducted following the arrest led to the recovery of several SIM cards, four mobile phones, two SIM card registration devices and four phone chargers.

Investigators believe the recovered equipment may have been used to facilitate mobile money fraud.

The items are being held as exhibits as officers continue investigating the case.

Police said Mugoi was being processed at the station ahead of his arraignment in court.
