NAIROBI, Kenya-Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s widow, Ida Odinga, has unveiled a national steering committee to coordinate activities marking the first anniversary of his death.
Speaking during a press briefing at Capitol Hill in Nairobi on Thursday, Ida said the commemorative programme would give Kenyans an opportunity to remember Raila’s life, leadership and contribution to the country.
The committee will be chaired by political analyst Prof Adams Oloo, with Rarieda MP Dr Otiende Amollo serving as deputy chairperson.
Its membership includes representatives from Raila’s family, the government, political institutions, civil society, academia and the private sector.
Raila Odinga Jr, Nominated Senator Crystal Asige and former Attorney General Amos Wako were among those present during the unveiling.
Ida said the commemorations would belong to all Kenyans who admired, supported and worked with the former Prime Minister.
“This celebration does not belong to the committee; it belongs to the people,” she said.
She noted that many Kenyans did not have sufficient time to mourn Raila following his death.
The anniversary programme would allow individuals and communities to celebrate his political journey, personality and relationship with the public.
The steering committee will prepare and publish a calendar of activities covering the anniversary period.
Events will run from October 10 to October 17, 2026, with details on public participation expected to be released later.
Ida said the programme had deliberately been framed as a celebration of Raila’s life, reflecting his love for people, sports, music, public debate and social gatherings.
Prof Oloo said the commemorations would remain family-led and that partnerships or proposed activities would require the family’s approval.
He added that the programme would be national, inclusive and people-centred.
Raila died on October 15, 2025. He served as Kenya’s Prime Minister and contested the presidency five times.
He was also a leading figure in Kenya’s struggle for multiparty democracy and constitutional reforms.
The committee will announce the complete programme and participation guidelines ahead of the anniversary week.
