NAIROBI, Kenya- Detectives have arrested a third suspect in the investigation into the killing of Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, widening the probe into the planning and execution of the September 2025 shooting.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said Noah Kipkirui Langat, a boda boda rider, is suspected of conducting surveillance on Mbobu before the lawyer was fatally shot along Magadi Road on September 9, 2025.
Langat joins Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot and boda boda rider Nicholas Lemiso Naula, who were arrested earlier on Thursday.
Cheruiyot is suspected of being the gunman, while Naula is accused of transporting him to and from the scene.
Naula was arrested in Nairobi’s Central Business District during what the DCI described as an intelligence-led operation targeting people suspected of involvement in the murder.
The three suspects are in custody as detectives pursue other people believed to have planned, facilitated or participated in the killing.
The DCI described Mbobu’s murder as a meticulously planned operation and said investigators were working to establish the full chain of responsibility.
The arrests come more than a year after Mbobu was attacked while driving home from work. The lawyer was shot several times in what investigators described as a targeted killing.
A post-mortem examination found that Mbobu had been shot eight times and died from severe bleeding.
The investigation recorded a major breakthrough with the arrest of Cheruiyot and the recovery of a Ceska pistol that had been issued to him at the time of the killing.
According to the DCI, ballistic examination linked the police-issued firearm to Mbobu’s murder.
Detectives are now examining the suspected roles of the three people in custody while following fresh leads on others believed to have been involved.
The DCI said the operation remained active and that investigators were pursuing everyone suspected of involvement, including those who allegedly planned and financed the attack.
