ELDORET, Kenysa- Two police officers have been arrested following a shooting incident at a nightclub in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, after one of them allegedly discharged a firearm during a confrontation with staff.
According to a police report filed at Eldoret Police Station and seen by Y News, the incident occurred at Baniyas Night Club, located about two kilometres west of the station.
The report indicates that the two men entered the establishment at around 12:30pm, where they ordered food and alcoholic drinks before an altercation broke out with a waiter at about 9pm.
Police said one of the men allegedly became violent, drew a pistol and fired a round of ammunition inside the club.
Bouncers at the establishment reportedly intervened quickly and managed to disarm the suspect before police officers arrived at the scene.
The officers were later identified as Chief Inspector John Ruto, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Villa Police Station in Kibra, Nairobi, and Police Constable Peter Kiprotich Ruto attached to Kapsaos Police Post in Turbo Sub-County.
Authorities said a Ceska pistol loaded with 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition was recovered, alongside one spent cartridge collected from the scene.
Police also recovered cash and foreign currencies from the suspects, including KSh673,000, five Euros, 15 US dollars and 10 Polish zloty.
The report further stated that the suspects sustained minor facial injuries after allegedly being assaulted by members of the public during the incident.
The two officers were escorted to Eldoret Police Station and detained pending further investigations.
The case is being handled by the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Office (SCCIO) in Turbo under “police under investigation” status.
