UN Chief Guterres, Ruto TO Kick Off Major UN Nairobi HQ Expansion Project

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is expected in Nairobi, Kenya, on Monday for a high-profile visit that will see him join President William Ruto at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) for the inauguration of new offices and the groundbreaking of a major conference facility.

According to official UN and government communications, Guterres and President Ruto will jointly preside over the launch of a large-scale expansion project at UNON, which is one of the UN’s four major global headquarters and its only base in Africa.

The project includes the construction of new modern office buildings and an upgraded conference complex aimed at significantly boosting Nairobi’s capacity as a global diplomatic and multilateral hub.

UN officials say the expansion will increase meeting capacity, improve infrastructure efficiency, and enhance Nairobi’s role in global decision-making on peace, climate change, and development.

The visit comes as part of Guterres’ broader engagement with African leaders on strengthening multilateral cooperation and addressing global challenges such as climate change, humanitarian crises, and sustainable development.

President Ruto has positioned Kenya as a leading diplomatic centre in Africa, hosting international organisations and advocating for stronger global representation for the continent.

The ceremony in Gigiri is expected to draw senior UN officials, government leaders, and diplomats from across the region.

UNON, located in Nairobi’s Gigiri area, hosts key UN agencies including UNEP and UN-Habitat, making it a central operational hub for the United Nations in Africa.

The event marks another milestone in Kenya’s growing role in international diplomacy and global governance architecture.
