NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) has forecast rainfall in parts of nine counties during the latest weather period, while warning that most parts of the country will remain generally dry.
In its weather forecast issued on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the meteorological authority said parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri, Murang’a, Laikipia, Nakuru and Kilifi counties are likely to receive rainfall.
“Most parts of the country are expected to be generally dry. However, some parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri, Murang’a, Laikipia, Nakuru and Kilifi Counties are likely to receive rainfall,” the forecast stated.
Cool and cloudy conditions expected
Kenya Met also forecast occasional cool and cloudy conditions during the first half of the forecast period.
The conditions are expected in parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a and Nairobi.
Other counties expected to experience similar conditions include Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka Nithi, Nakuru, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta.
Residents in these areas may experience cooler conditions and increased cloud cover, particularly during the morning and early parts of the day.
Several counties to experience temperatures above 30°C
While some areas are expected to remain cool, Kenya Met warned that daytime temperatures will remain high in several parts of the country.
Maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C in Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia and Turkana counties.
The forecast highlights the continued contrast between the warmer conditions expected in northern, eastern and coastal areas and cooler conditions in parts of the central highlands.
Cold nights in central and Rift Valley counties
Kenya Met also forecast particularly cold nights in several counties.
Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Embu, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru and Narok are expected to record minimum average temperatures of below 10°C.
Residents in the affected highland areas may therefore experience a significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures.
Comparison with previous forecast
The latest forecast differs from the weather outlook issued on Tuesday, August 25, when Kenya Met predicted rainfall in Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Tana River, Lamu, Kirinyaga and Embu.
The previous forecast also identified Tharaka Nithi, Nyeri, Murang’a, Garissa, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia among counties expected to receive showers during the week.
Cool and cloudy conditions were also forecast in a wider group of counties, including Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka Nithi, Nakuru, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, Marsabit and Wajir.
Highest and lowest temperatures recorded
Kenya Met also provided a summary of temperature extremes recorded during the previous period.
The highest daily maximum temperature was 38.6°C, recorded at Mandera Meteorological Station on August 26.
The lowest daily minimum temperature was recorded at Nyahururu Meteorological Station, where temperatures fell to 3.7°C on August 29.
The readings demonstrate the wide variation in weather conditions across Kenya, from very warm temperatures in northern areas to markedly cold nights in the highlands.
