MOMBASA, Kenya – Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno Dubat has dismissed reports of a curfew in Likoni, assuring residents they can continue with their normal activities as security agencies pursue suspects behind a deadly attack that left a county enforcement officer dead and a police firearm missing.
In a press statement issued on Friday, October 30, Nuno said the October 26 incident in Likoni Sub-County was an isolated criminal attack and should not be interpreted as a reflection of the general security situation in the area.
“There is NO CURFEW in Likoni. Law-abiding citizens will NOT be affected in any way by the ongoing targeted security operations,” he said.
The clarification comes amid reports circulating on social media suggesting that authorities had imposed restrictions on movement following the attack.
Nuno urged residents to disregard unverified information, warning that some individuals were spreading alarming claims intended to create panic and fear.
He advised the public to rely on official communication from the National Police Service.
Police hunt for attackers and missing AK-47
The October 26 attack left a Mombasa County enforcement officer dead, while a police officer sustained injuries in the line of duty.
An AK-47 rifle was also taken during the incident, prompting security agencies to launch operations to apprehend those responsible and recover the weapon.
The attack occurred at a county cess collection checkpoint along Barabara ya Mchanga in Likoni, where county enforcement officers and Administration Police personnel were on duty.
Earlier reports indicated that the attackers overwhelmed the officers during the confrontation and escaped with the police rifle, which was reportedly loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.
Nuno said security agencies were working around the clock to identify and arrest the suspects.
“The security agencies are burning the midnight oil and are fully committed to doing everything humanly possible to bring the authors of this heinous crime to book and recover the lost firearm,” he said.
He described the incident as an isolated criminal matter and maintained that the ongoing operations were specifically targeting those responsible.
Residents urged to continue normal activities
The regional police commander appealed to residents of Likoni and the wider Mombasa region to cooperate with security agencies as investigations and targeted operations continue.
He assured the public that officers would carry out their duties with fairness, impartiality, firmness and objectivity.
“I call upon residents of Likoni and Mombasa to go on with their normal duties uninterrupted. Security has been enhanced,” he said.
He added that security was a shared responsibility and urged members of the public to support police efforts by providing relevant information.
