Dormitory Destroyed in Night Fire at Mirithu Girls High School in Limuru

Date:

LIMURU, Kenya — A fire broke out at Mirithu Girls High School in Limuru, Kiambu County, on Wednesday night, destroying one of the school’s dormitories and leaving students counting losses after personal belongings were reduced to ashes.

The blaze erupted while students were attending their evening prep classes, according to preliminary reports. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Early findings suggest the inferno may have been caused by an electrical fault inside the dormitory, although investigations are still ongoing.

Photos and videos circulating online showed the dormitory engulfed in massive flames, with thick black smoke billowing into the night sky as residents and students watched from a distance.

Firefighters from the Kiambu County government responded to the scene and managed to contain the blaze before it spread to other structures within the school compound.

The fire destroyed several personal effects belonging to students who had only recently returned to school for the second term. The extent of the damage has not yet been officially quantified.

In recent years, the Ministry of Education has directed schools to comply with safety regulations following several deadly dormitory fires reported across the country.

The government has also pushed institutions to improve infrastructure standards and reduce risks linked to overcrowding and faulty electrical wiring.

Police and education officials are expected to conduct further investigations to establish the exact cause of the Mirithu Girls High School fire.

The incident comes as schools across the country resume learning activities for the second term, with administrators under pressure to ensure student safety within learning institutions.
