NAIROBI, Kenya- In a significant leadership shift at the University of Nairobi, Professor Margaret Hutchinson has been appointed as the acting Vice-Chancellor following the suspension of Professor Stephen Kiama Gitahi.
The University of Nairobi Council, led by Chairman Amukowa Anangwe, facilitated Hutchinson’s smooth transition into her new role last Friday.
Professor Hutchinson, a seasoned horticulturist and senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi, brings over 30 years of expertise in the agriculture sector to her new position.
She has pledged to execute her mandate diligently, aiming to steer the university towards continued excellence.
“I am ready to work and make the University of Nairobi the great institution it has always been,” Hutchinson stated, emphasizing her commitment to upholding the university’s standards.
Amidst her transition, Professor Hutchinson addressed some of the controversial policies implemented by her predecessor, including the hike in hostel and tuition fees.
“I am aware of the reservations around the hike in hostel fees and tuition fees. I cannot promise that I will change that by tomorrow, but we will consult to find a suitable way forward,” she said.
Her approach includes holding consultations with various stakeholders to evaluate and potentially revise these contentious policies, ensuring that decisions benefit the entire university community.
Professor Hutchinson also announced plans to collaborate with development partners to upgrade and renovate the university’s hostels. This initiative aims to provide students with improved living conditions and enhance their overall university experience.
