Ruto Hosts Kikwete for Talks on South Sudan Peace Efforts

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to regional peace, saying lasting stability in Africa depends on collective action by all stakeholders.

Speaking after a meeting at State House, Nairobi, with former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, Ruto emphasised the need to “silence the guns” and strengthen cooperation to secure peace across the continent.

Kikwete currently serves as the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.

Focus on South Sudan

The talks centred on the situation in South Sudan, with both leaders reviewing progress and ongoing challenges in the young nation’s peace journey.

Ruto noted that South Sudan has made significant strides since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005 and its independence in 2011.

“Kenya and the region have walked with the people of South Sudan in their triumphs and challenges,” he said.

Regional cooperation key

The meeting underscores Kenya’s continued role in regional diplomacy, particularly in supporting peace processes in neighbouring countries.

Analysts say Nairobi remains a key mediator in South Sudan’s political transition, hosting negotiations and backing efforts aimed at long-term stability.

Ruto stressed that sustainable peace in Africa requires unity among governments, regional bodies, and international partners.

The engagement with Kikwete signals renewed momentum in diplomatic efforts to stabilise South Sudan and the wider Horn of Africa region.
