Ethiopia Drone Strikes: 16 Killed at Displacement Camp in Amhara

Date:

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – At least 16 people, including children and pregnant women, have reportedly been killed in a series of drone strikes on a camp for internally displaced people in Ethiopia’s Amhara region.

Witnesses told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Friday that four successive drone strikes hit the displacement centre on Thursday, approximately 250 miles northeast of the capital, Addis Ababa.

One witness, identified only as Yasin for security reasons, said 14 bodies had been buried at the camp, while two other victims died after being taken for medical treatment.

“Four drone strikes were carried out one after another. We have buried 14 people at the IDP centre. Two more died while receiving medical treatment,” Yasin told AFP.

The witness said pregnant women and children were among those killed, highlighting the vulnerability of civilians sheltering at the facility.

The reported attack adds to growing concerns over the safety of displaced communities caught up in the conflict in Ethiopia’s Amhara region.

The circumstances surrounding the strikes, including the intended targets and the parties responsible, were not established in the witness accounts provided.

The death toll and details of the incident remain subject to independent verification as further information emerges.
