Nyali MP Mohamed Ali Distances Himself from Gachagua Impeachment Motion, Calls It ‘Ill-Intentioned’

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Nyali MP Mohamed Ali has publicly distanced himself from the ongoing impeachment process against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, calling the move “ill-intentioned” and a misguided attempt to malign the DP’s record.

In a statement released on X, hours after Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse tabled the impeachment motion, Ali emphasized that he does not support the ouster bid.

The motion accuses Gachagua of multiple offenses, including corruption, money laundering, and undermining the president.

“I have carefully read the charges in the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. In good faith, I do not support this cause of action and find it ill-intentioned, seeking to demonize a public servant who has contributed immensely to this great country,” Ali said.

Mutuse’s impeachment motion outlines 11 charges against Gachagua, which range from insubordination to President William Ruto, stirring ethnic tension, bullying Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) officials, and attacking Justice Esther Maina publicly.

He further alleges that Gachagua’s wealth has grown suspiciously fast, claiming the DP’s assets surged from KSh 800 million to KSh 5.2 billion in just two years.

Mutuse remarked during the motion’s introduction: “It is impossible for someone earning about KSh 12 million annually to amass such wealth in that short period. This is what we call unexplained assets.” He emphasized that his action was driven by duty and not by personal vendetta against Gachagua.

Despite 291 MPs signing in support of the impeachment, Ali was quick to clarify that his name was not among them.

“Let it be known that I, Mohamed Ali Mohamed, did not sign the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua,” he reiterated.

The motion will proceed for debate in the National Assembly, with Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirming that public participation is scheduled for October 4 across the country, coordinated from the 47 counties.

Wetang’ula noted, “Public participation is an integral element of the process of removal of an elected state officer from office.”

The impeachment process will culminate in a hearing set for October 8, where Gachagua will have the opportunity to appear in person or through legal representation.

If a third of MPs—equivalent to 233 members—support the motion, Gachagua will be impeached and removed from office immediately.
