High-Stakes Political Contest
The Ol Kalou by-election attracted national attention as one of the first major electoral contests since the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
It was widely viewed as a political showdown between President William Ruto’s UDA and the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), a party associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with both camps seeking to demonstrate their influence in Nyandarua County and the wider Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The constituency has 73,480 registered voters spread across 144 polling stations.
Who Is Sammy Kamau Ngotho?
Kamau Ngotho is a native of Ol Kalou Constituency and is widely regarded as a grassroots politician with extensive experience in local leadership.
He attended A.C. Primary School in Karau/Kaimbaga before joining Utumishi Boys High School for his secondary education.
He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nairobi.
His political career began in 2013, when he became the inaugural Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Karau Ward on a TNA/DP ticket.
In 2017, he sought re-election as an independent candidate after falling out with his party during nominations but narrowly lost by fewer than 200 votes.
Kamau Ngotho later served as a Protocol Officer and Political Adviser in the Office of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua before joining the DCP, where he became the party’s Nyandarua County Coordinator, helping build its grassroots structures.

Who Is Samuel Muchina Nyagah?
UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah hails from Nyandarua County and holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from Mount Kenya University.
Before entering elective politics, he served as a Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Manager and worked as a longtime aide to the late MP David Kiaraho, gaining experience in constituency development, bursary management and grassroots administration.
Following Kiaraho’s death, UDA selected Muchina as its candidate, arguing that electing a representative from the ruling party would strengthen collaboration between the constituency and the national government.
Kamau Ngotho’s decisive victory now hands DCP a significant political win in the Mt Kenya region, with the outcome likely to shape political alignments as parties prepare for the 2027 General Election.
