Edgar Lungu: Fallen Ex-Zambian President to be Buried in South Africa, His Family Says

Date:

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The late former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu will be laid to rest in South Africa, his family has announced, opting for a private burial ceremony in Johannesburg.

In a statement released on Friday, the family said the decision reflects their wishes to mourn in peace and dignity, away from political interference or public spectacle.

The burial will be conducted in South Africa, where Lungu had been staying before his death.

“The funeral and burial of our beloved Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu will take place here in South Africa, in accordance with the family’s wishes for a private ceremony,” said family spokesperson Makebi Zulu.

The family expressed deep gratitude to the South African government for its “respectful support” and for honouring their request for privacy.

The statement also acknowledged International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola for personally conveying condolences on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Family Seeks Space to Mourn in Dignity

Lungu’s family emphasized that this moment was an emotional and personal one, calling for peace and unity among Zambians during the mourning period.

“We are grateful for the overwhelming support and condolences extended to the family from across the continent and the globe,” the statement read.

The family also commended the South African government for “non-interference” and upholding constitutional rights that allow the family to proceed with arrangements as they see fit.

Private Funeral, Details to Follow

The family confirmed that funeral and burial arrangements will be private, with details to be communicated to both Zambian and South African publics in due course.

The announcement marks a significant decision that sets aside expectations of a state funeral in Zambia, where Lungu served as the sixth President from 2015 to 2021.

Lungu’s presidency was marked by both support and controversy.

He led Zambia through a period of economic challenges and increasing political polarisation.

After losing to President Hakainde Hichilema in 2021, Lungu kept a relatively low profile before re-entering public discourse in 2024, which stirred tensions with the current administration.
