NAIROBI,Kenya— The government has opened applications for 220 completed housing units under the Boma Yangu Machakos Affordable Housing Project, signaling a major milestone in its agenda to provide accessible housing for all Kenyans.
The newly completed units include 60 studio apartments, 40 one-bedroom units, 60 two-bedroom units, and 60 three-bedroom houses.
“This initiative is part of our broader goal to deliver decent and dignified housing across all 47 counties,” said Charles Hinga, Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development.
“These projects are for Kenyans. We have made deliberate efforts to ensure every citizen can save, purchase and own a housing unit as they pursue their aspirations,” he added.
The affordable housing championed by President William Ruto aims to address the country’s housing deficit by delivering 500,000 affordable homes to low- and middle-income Kenyans over the years.
The homes are delivered through platforms such as Boma Yangu, which allows Kenyans to register, save, and apply for units based on eligibility and availability. Priority is given to those who have been actively contributing to the housing fund.
So far, the government has rolled out projects in several counties.
According to Treasury,2,379 units have so far been completed since September 2022 while 11,000 units are in their final stages of completion.
