‘Extra Time Atachezea Sugoi’: Methu’s Cryptic Message After Gachagua-Kalonzo Talks

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Nyandarua Senator John Methu has hinted at a possible political endgame following a meeting between Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and Wiper Patriotic Front leaders at Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence, using a football metaphor that appeared to point to President William Ruto’s political future.

In a post on X on Monday, October 26, Methu wrote: “Game ni 90. Extra time atachezea Sugoi.”

The remark came on the same day Gachagua hosted Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and a delegation of political leaders for consultations on opposition unity and the possibility of settling on a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In football, a standard match lasts 90 minutes, with extra time sometimes played in knockout competitions when a winner has not been decided. Methu’s reference to “extra time” at Sugoi, Ruto’s home area in Uasin Gishu County, could be read as a political jab suggesting that the decisive contest will extend to the president’s political backyard.

The senator did not explicitly explain the meaning of the post, and it remains unclear whether he was referring to a specific political strategy or simply mocking the president.

Wamunyoro Talks Add to Opposition Realignments

Methu’s post followed the meeting between Gachagua and Kalonzo, which came less than a week after the former deputy president hosted Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement at Wamunyoro on October 20.

The engagements have fuelled discussion about whether DCP, Wiper and the Linda Mwananchi camp can develop a common political arrangement ahead of the 2027 polls.

After Monday’s meeting, Gachagua said he had held extensive consultations with Kalonzo and Wiper leaders on the country’s political future and the formation of what he called the “6th administration”.

He added that the leaders were prepared to make sacrifices to settle on one presidential candidate, describing the consultations as ongoing.

The question of who would lead such an arrangement, however, remains unresolved publicly.

DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has said the party favours Sifuna as its preferred presidential candidate and wants Kalonzo to support him. Wiper, meanwhile, has disputed the suggestion that the meeting was simply intended to secure Kalonzo’s endorsement of Sifuna.

Sifuna Meeting Adds Another Layer to the Talks

The October 20 meeting between Gachagua and Sifuna had already raised questions about possible cooperation between DCP and the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has drawn attention through its “WANTAM” political messaging.

Gachagua’s subsequent engagement with Kalonzo has widened the consultations to another opposition leader with presidential ambitions.

Methu, who serves as DCP Secretary General, is among the party officials involved in the political activity surrounding the talks.

His “90 minutes” remark adds a layer of political messaging to the discussions, but it does not confirm that an agreement has been reached or that the participating leaders have settled on a joint candidate.

With consultations continuing, the key question is whether the separate opposition formations can agree on a candidate and a common strategy before the 2027 General Election.
