ChatGPT Tops Global AI Tools With 5.3 Billion Monthly Visits, Ranking Shows

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – ChatGPT has emerged as the world’s most visited AI tool, recording 5.3 billion website visits in June 2026 and pulling further ahead of its closest competitors, according to a new ranking by AITools.xyz.

The OpenAI chatbot attracted more traffic than the next 14 AI tools combined, which collectively recorded 4.7 billion visits during the same month.

The figures highlight ChatGPT’s dominant position in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence market, despite growing competition from Google, Anthropic, xAI, DeepSeek and Microsoft.

The ranking is based on website traffic data modelled from SEMrush and Ahrefs. It measures visits to websites and does not include usage through mobile applications or APIs.

Gemini and Claude trail ChatGPT

Google’s Gemini ranked second with 1.14 billion monthly visits, while Anthropic’s Claude was third with 967.9 million.

Canva, which has expanded its AI capabilities within its design platform, ranked fourth with 759.8 million visits.

Google Translate occupied fifth place with 343 million visits, followed by Chinese AI company DeepSeek at 318.8 million.

Grok, developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, ranked seventh with 189.9 million visits.

The figures demonstrate the considerable gap between ChatGPT and its rivals. ChatGPT’s 5.3 billion visits were more than four times Gemini’s traffic and more than five times Claude’s.

Character AI platforms attract hundreds of millions

AI platforms focused on character-based interactions also recorded substantial traffic.

JanitorAI registered 173.2 million visits, while Character AI recorded 165.5 million.

Together, the two platforms attracted approximately 338.7 million visits, significantly more than the combined 233.4 million recorded by Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.

Other major platforms in the top 15 included Notion, with 110.6 million visits, Zoom with 96.2 million, and AI music-generation platform Suno with 81.8 million.

US companies dominate AI rankings

The ranking also reveals the geographic concentration of the global AI industry.

Twelve of the 15 most-visited AI tools were headquartered in the United States.

The only non-US platforms in the top 15 were Canva from Australia, DeepSeek from China and Magnific from Spain, the AI image-upscaling tool operated by Freepik.

The dominance of US-based platforms reflects the country’s continued influence over the development and commercialisation of generative AI technologies.

Google faces sizeable gap

Despite Google’s enormous digital ecosystem, including Search, Android and Chrome, its leading AI platform remains well behind ChatGPT in web traffic.

Gemini and Google Translate together generated approximately 1.48 billion visits in June.

That figure was less than one-third of ChatGPT’s reported 5.3 billion visits.

Microsoft’s Copilot recorded 92.7 million website visits, although the figure does not capture usage of Copilot features integrated into Windows and Microsoft Office.

This distinction is significant because website traffic alone does not necessarily represent total usage of an AI service. Platforms embedded within other products can receive substantial activity that is not reflected in standalone website-visit figures.

Traffic figures show scale, but not total AI use

The AITools.xyz ranking provides an indication of the relative popularity of AI websites, but its methodology means the figures should not be interpreted as a complete measure of how often people use each AI platform.

Mobile applications and API activity are excluded, potentially affecting services with large numbers of users accessing them through apps or software integrations.

Even with that limitation, the figures point to a significant lead for ChatGPT in standalone web traffic.

The ranking also illustrates how quickly the AI market has diversified, with general-purpose chatbots competing alongside translation services, design platforms, productivity tools, character-based applications, AI search engines and generative music services.

As AI companies increasingly embed their technologies into operating systems, productivity suites and other digital products, the distinction between an AI website and an AI service is likely to become increasingly important when measuring global usage.
