NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has released a list of technical courses that it says have been phased out starting November 2025.
In a statement, KNEC CEO David Njengere copied the list to all heads of TVET institutions, TVET county directors, and sub-county directors of education offering business and technical examinations.
“TVET curricula and syllabi have been under review by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) since 2009. In the review, non-modular courses have gradually been removed by modular TVET courses,” said Njengere.
According to Njengere, the fists of phased-out business and technical courses and the courses that replaced them are contained in appendices 2, and 3, respectively.
“Institutions were expected to migrate to the new modular courses within five years of the expiry of the old courses. KNEC has been offering candidates with referrals in the phased-out courses opportunities to register and sit the affected papers. However, some institutions have often used this as a loophole to register fresh candidates in the expired courses,” he added.
KNEC notified the institutions still offering the expired course that examinations for the phased-out courses will be offered for the last time in November 2025 as shown in Appendix 1 and Appendix 2. There will be no registration of candidates for these courses after November 2025.
“Phased-out modular courses will be discontinued progressively between November 2025 and November 2027 as shown in Appendix 3. There will be no registration of candidates for these modular courses after November 2027,” Njengere further announced.
