NAIROBI, Kenya, May 15- ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo now says he is not bothered by the online trolls Kenyans continue to direct toward him. According to Kabogo, it is like Kenyans to troll people, adding that he will take the heat.
“The beauty is I truly enjoy the themes. This is how you should not worry about too many things’ people say,” he said.
The ICT CS has been at the center of a storm of online banter, with netizens creating memes of him in an apparent mockery of his dress code.
Kabogo has been depicted in a picture that is now making rounds on social media capturing him in an oversized white shirt, red tie, brown khaki trousers, stripped socks and a safari shoe, an ensemble that quickly turned into fodder for online jokes and memes, typical of Kenyan netizens.
Some netizens have also made videos on social platforms like TikTok and X mocking his understanding of the ICT docket.
Kabogo, 64, a veteran political figure and former Kiambu Governor, was unexpectedly named to head the Ministry of Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy in January as part of President William Ruto’s reorganization of his broad-based government following the dissolution of the cabinet in 2024 at the behest of the Gen-Z demonstrations.
His appointment came at a turbulent time for the ministry, with stakeholders calling for stability, innovation, and decisive leadership amid fast-changing global tech trends.
Critics urge that Kabogo is out of touch with the demands of the ICT docket, stating that he is not tech savvy in an area that requires not just administrative expertise but a deep understanding of the evolving technological trends, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, as well as the ever-changing social landscape.
