NAIROBI, Kenya- Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said he would have no objection to deputising Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in the 2027 presidential election, while stressing that the opposition must consider Kenya’s regional and demographic dynamics when selecting its leadership.
Speaking during an interview on NTV on Monday, Kalonzo said the opposition’s primary objective should be to remain united and challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
“I have no problem deputising Sifuna, but you must take into account Kenya’s demographics,” Kalonzo said.
He said his willingness to work with Sifuna was not limited to one individual, arguing that he had consistently demonstrated a commitment to what he described as a national cause.
“Not just Sifuna by the way. I have demonstrated commitment and belief in a national cause for the national good. But you know we live in this country as well. We know the demographics and these communities. Every community wants to have a stake at the table. Beyond those numbers, you must take into account those other considerations,” he said.
Kalonzo predicts opposition victory
Kalonzo expressed confidence that a united opposition could defeat Ruto by a wide margin, saying the opposition could secure more than 70 per cent of the vote if it maintains unity through the election.
He likened the potential outcome to the 2002 presidential election, when the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) united behind Mwai Kibaki and defeated KANU’s Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kalonzo said he expected Kenyans to witness another “Kibaki moment” in 2027, arguing that a united opposition could secure more than the constitutional threshold required to win the presidency.
He maintained that the identity of the opposition’s eventual presidential flag bearer should be secondary to the broader objective of defeating Ruto.
According to Kalonzo, the opposition understands that the government’s strategy is to divide its competing political formations ahead of the election.
‘United Alternative Government’ in waiting
The Wiper leader described his opposition coalition as a “United Alternative Government”, claiming that the alliance was already preparing to take over government.
He said the group had taken what he described as an unusual step by publishing a “people’s budget” ahead of the election to demonstrate that it was preparing an alternative programme for governing the country.
Kalonzo also criticised opinion polls, urging Kenyans to treat survey findings with caution.
He alleged, without providing evidence, that some polling firms were being influenced or funded by the government to promote Ruto’s candidacy.
Claims of police unit working with goons
The former Vice President also alleged that a government-linked police unit was working with criminal groups to intimidate political opponents.
“Did you know that there is an Operational Support Unit (OSU)? That is a unit that is working with goons, the militias, to terrorize even political opponents. I can tell you for a fact because I have been in government. I want to encourage the Inspector General of police to disband that thing very quickly,” he said.
The allegations, if substantiated, would raise serious concerns about the use of state security structures in political activities. Kalonzo did not provide specific evidence during the interview to support the claims.
He urged the government to allow Kenyans space to express their political views and participate freely in the democratic process.
Kalonzo said he and his political allies were developing a 13-point agenda that they believe would address the country’s major challenges and provide an alternative direction for Kenya.
The remarks come as political parties and leaders across the opposition continue negotiations over alliances, leadership positions and a possible joint presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 election.
