NAIROBI, Kenya — The government has proposed Kamukunji Police Station as the headquarters of the new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, as part of efforts to strengthen security coordination in the capital.
The Ministry of Interior and National Administration said the station will be transformed into a modern security complex equipped with operational offices, police housing and a state-of-the-art command centre.
According to the ministry, Kamukunji was selected because of its strategic location within one of Nairobi’s busiest commercial districts.
“Kamukunji is one of Nairobi’s clearest representations of the city’s role as Kenya’s commercial and financial centre but operating within a complex urban security environment,” the ministry said.
Modern Security Complex
The planned redevelopment will convert the existing police station into a comprehensive security hub designed to improve policing and emergency response across Nairobi.
The facility will include:
- Operational offices for the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit.
- Modern police housing.
- Enhanced operational infrastructure.
- Integrated communication and surveillance systems.
Integrated Command Centre
A key feature of the new headquarters will be the Integrated Command and Communication Centre (IC4), which will facilitate real-time coordination of security operations across Nairobi City County.
The command centre is expected to enhance communication, surveillance, incident monitoring and coordinated deployment of security personnel during emergencies and routine policing.
Multi-Agency Site Assessment
The proposed site was inspected by a multi-agency technical team led by Secretary for Internal Security Thomas Sakah.
The assessment brought together representatives from:
- Kenya Defence Forces (KDF)
- Kenya Police Service
- Administration Police Service
- Nairobi City County Government
- State Department for Housing and Urban Development
The team evaluated the suitability of Kamukunji Police Station for the planned redevelopment.
The Ministry of Interior announced that construction of the new headquarters is scheduled to commence in August 2026.
