KDF Officers Shine at Burundi Military Staff College Graduation

Date:

BUJUMBURA, Burundi — Two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers have graduated from the Senior Command and Staff College (SCSC) Kinanira in Burundi, with one earning the institution’s highest academic honour and another Kenyan officer being recognised for excellence in instruction.

The graduation of Course 10 was held on June 11, 2026, at the military college in Bujumbura and brought together officers from several partner nations who successfully completed advanced professional military training.

The ceremony was presided over by the Chief of Defence Forces of the Burundi National Defence Force (BNDF) and attended by senior military leaders from across the region, including Eric Kinuthia, the Commandant of the Joint Command and Staff College, Karen.

Among the graduates were KDF officers Shukri Abdi and William Masha, who completed the rigorous programme designed to prepare officers for senior command, staff, and operational responsibilities.

Lieutenant Colonel Abdi emerged as the Best Overall Student Officer, an award recognising exceptional academic performance, leadership, and professional competence throughout the course.

The achievement underscores the growing reputation of Kenyan military officers within regional professional military education institutions and reflects the KDF’s emphasis on leadership development and operational excellence.

In a further recognition of Kenya’s contribution to military training in the region, Vincent Rono was honoured as the Best Directing Staff, acknowledging his outstanding role in mentoring and guiding officers undertaking the programme.

The Senior Command and Staff College is one of the region’s key institutions for advanced military education, equipping officers with the strategic, operational, and leadership skills required to address evolving security challenges and command complex military operations.

Professional military education remains a critical component of modern armed forces, enabling officers to develop expertise in planning, decision-making, joint operations, and regional security cooperation.

The recognition of Kenyan officers at the graduation ceremony highlights the strong defence cooperation between Kenya and Burundi and reinforces the role of regional military institutions in building capable and interoperable armed forces.

The achievements by Lt Col Abdi, Major Masha, and Col Rono also reflect the Kenya Defence Forces’ continued investment in professional development as part of broader efforts to strengthen leadership, operational readiness, and regional security partnerships.
