NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s chess community is mourning the death of 19-year-old chess player Kaloki Barry Hawi, who passed away on Monday morning, August 10, leaving fellow players, fans and the wider chess fraternity shocked.
The Chess Kenya Federation confirmed Hawi’s death on Monday evening, describing it as a painful loss to the sport and remembering him as a champion whose career was still in its early stages.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the untimely passing of our champion, Hawi Kaloki, who passed away this morning,” Chess Kenya stated.
International chess photographer David Lladla also confirmed the news, describing Hawi’s death as a major loss to the chess community that had followed his development.
“I just received the shocking news of the passing of Hawi Kaloki, a multiple-time Kenyan champion. He was just 19,” Lladla said.
Rising Through Kenya’s Chess Ranks
Born in 2007, Hawi had established himself as one of Kenya’s promising young chess players despite his age.
He did not yet hold a Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) title, but his international rating profile placed him among the country’s notable emerging players.
Hawi was registered with FIDE under identification number 10814582. He was ranked fifth among active Kenyan players and eighth when all Kenyan players on the FIDE list were considered.
On the African continent, he ranked 409th among active players and 918th overall.
His standing was particularly notable given his young age and the relatively short period in which he had competed at the highest levels of Kenyan chess.
A Career Cut Short
Hawi’s death has brought an abrupt end to a career that fellow players and supporters believed had significant potential.
His multiple national championship appearances and growing profile had made him one of the young players to watch as Kenya sought to strengthen its position in African chess.
His passing has therefore been felt not only as the loss of a talented competitor but also as the loss of a young player who represented the future of the sport in Kenya.
