The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has postponed the opening round of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League season, delaying the start of the new campaign amid an ongoing dispute over the competition’s promotion and relegation framework.
The federation called off all Round One matches that were scheduled to take place between Monday, August 31, and Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The postponement comes only days after FKF had confirmed August 31 as the start date for the new season.
The latest development has plunged the league into further uncertainty as the federation attempts to resolve disagreements with clubs while navigating ongoing court proceedings concerning the regulations governing the competition.
FKF communicated the postponement through its Leagues and Competitions Department, informing Premier League clubs that the opening-round matches would not proceed as planned.
The federation said the decision would provide time for consultations involving FKF, participating clubs and league sponsors. According to the communication, the postponement will allow stakeholders to deliberate and establish a clear direction for the upcoming season.
The federation is expected to issue a revised Round One programme and full-season schedule once the consultations produce an agreement.
The postponement follows a prolonged disagreement over the rules governing promotion and relegation in the Kenyan top flight. Several clubs have challenged aspects of the regulations FKF intends to use for the 2026/27 season.
The dispute has created uncertainty over which rules should govern the competition and how clubs affected by promotion and relegation decisions should be treated.
The matter has also moved into the courts, complicating FKF’s efforts to begin the season on schedule. The federation now faces pressure to reach an agreement with the clubs while ensuring that any decision complies with the applicable legal framework.
The latest postponement comes despite a recent court development that appeared to clear the way for the Premier League to begin.
The High Court in Murang’a granted FKF interim permission to proceed with the 2026/27 season under the 2019 FKF Rules and Regulations while the wider legal dispute continues.
The ruling initially provided FKF with a pathway to start the competition.
However, a separate dispute involving Kariobangi Sharks’ appeal has introduced further uncertainty over the regulations and the federation’s ability to proceed without addressing outstanding legal questions.
The federation had planned an urgent meeting with Premier League club chairmen on Monday as it sought to address the dispute.
FKF has not announced a new date for the postponed fixtures. Instead, the federation has indicated that it will issue revised fixtures after reaching common ground with the relevant stakeholders.
Among the fixtures affected are several high-profile encounters that were scheduled for the opening three days of the campaign. Defending champions Gor Mahia were due to begin their title defence against Murang’a SEAL, while other clubs were also scheduled to launch their campaigns across the country.
The immediate focus now shifts to the Wednesday, September 2 stakeholders’ meeting.
