GABORONE, Botswana — Team Kenya delivered a commanding performance at the 2026 Lefika International Relays, clinching one gold and two silver medals in a strong showing that underlined the country’s growing dominance in sprint relays.

Led by African sprint champion Ferdinand Omanyala, the Kenyan squad stood out against a competitive international field, showcasing both speed and coordination across multiple relay categories.

Kenya’s standout moment came in the 4x400m mixed relay, where the team stormed to a historic gold medal, clocking an impressive 3:14.04.

The performance marked a significant milestone for Kenyan sprinting, a discipline traditionally overshadowed by the country’s long-distance pedigree.

The team added to its medal haul with a silver in the 4x100m mixed relay, finishing in 41.70. The race highlighted Kenya’s improving depth in short-distance events, with smooth baton exchanges and strong finishes keeping them firmly on the podium.

In the men’s 4x100m relay, the Omanyala-led quartet secured another silver medal after crossing the line in 39.12, capping off a successful outing for the East African nation.

The results signal a steady rise for Kenya in global sprint competitions, driven in part by the influence of Omanyala, who has played a key role in reshaping the country’s sprinting profile on the international stage.

Competing in Gaborone, the Lefika International Relays have increasingly become a platform for emerging and established sprint nations to test their depth ahead of major global championships.

With the 2026 season gaining momentum, Team Kenya’s relay success in Botswana offers a promising glimpse into its potential on the global stage, particularly as preparations intensify for upcoming continental and global competitions.
