MOMBASA, Kenya – The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has officially appointed CPA Justus Nyarandi as its new Director General, ushering in a new era of leadership at the helm of the country’s maritime regulatory body.
Nyarandi takes over from Isaiah Nakoru, who had been serving in an acting capacity.
The handover was formalized during a high-level meeting in Mombasa attended by senior officials from the State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs and the KMA board.
KMA Board Chairperson Ahmed Kolosh confirmed the appointment, lauding Nyarandi’s extensive background in maritime operations, international shipping, and public service as key qualifications that will strengthen the agency’s role in regional and global maritime affairs.
“Mr. Nyarandi brings a wealth of experience and leadership that is crucial as we reposition Kenya’s maritime sector for growth and global competitiveness,” said Kolosh.
Government Backing and Strategic Vision
Speaking during a familiarisation tour of KMA offices, Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs Aden Millah affirmed the government’s full support for the new leadership and its vision for the maritime sector.
“The maritime sector is not only an economic enabler but a critical link in our regional and international trade. Kenya’s position along the Indian Ocean gives it a strategic edge as a trade gateway, and this sector must be guided by capable leadership,” said Millah.
He added that Nyarandi’s combined expertise in diplomacy, maritime affairs, and public administration would be instrumental in accelerating port infrastructure development, enhancing maritime security, and fostering regional cooperation.
Millah further underscored the sector’s growing importance to Kenya’s national development priorities, including Vision 2030 and the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
“I urge all stakeholders to work closely with the new Director General in steering the sector towards inclusive and sustainable growth,” he said.
Strengthening Kenya’s Role as a Maritime Hub
The Kenya Maritime Authority is charged with regulating, coordinating, and overseeing maritime affairs in the country, including maritime safety and security, environmental protection, and training of seafarers.
Nyarandi’s appointment is expected to inject new momentum into KMA’s regulatory mandate at a time when Kenya is intensifying efforts to position itself as a leading maritime hub in East and Central Africa.
