Kenya Met Warns of Continued Rainfall Across Several Regions This Week

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall across several parts of the country between May 19 and May 25, with showers and thunderstorms expected in regions within the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Coast, and parts of eastern Kenya.

In its latest weekly weather outlook, the department said rainfall would continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, parts of the South-eastern lowlands, and sections of North-eastern Kenya.

The forecast comes amid ongoing concerns over flooding, waterlogged roads, and rising water levels in some regions following weeks of sustained rainfall.

Rift Valley and Lake Region to Receive More Rain

According to the forecast, areas in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley are expected to experience sunny intervals in the mornings before afternoon showers, and thunderstorms develop in several places.

The department said some areas could also receive occasional morning rainfall, while nights are expected to remain partly cloudy with isolated showers.

Regions around western Kenya and the Lake Victoria Basin have experienced heavy rainfall in recent weeks, leading to flooding in some low-lying areas.

Nairobi and Central Kenya Forecast

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and surrounding counties, mornings are expected to remain cloudy before breaking into sunny intervals later in the day.

Afternoon showers are likely over a few areas, while nights are expected to remain partly cloudy with occasional showers.

The weather department advised residents to remain alert for changing weather conditions, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when rainfall activity is expected to intensify.

Coast and Eastern Kenya

The Coast region is expected to experience sunny intervals during the day, although morning and night showers are likely in some places.

In the South-eastern lowlands, including parts of Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, and Taita Taveta, sunny conditions are expected during the day with possible afternoon showers.

Meanwhile, North-eastern and North-western Kenya are forecast to remain largely sunny during the day with partly cloudy nights.

However, isolated morning rains may occur in a few areas.
