Kijabe Crash Leaves Several Injured Along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway

Date:

KIJABE, Kenya — Several people have sustained serious injuries after a multiple-vehicle crash along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway near Kijabe on Monday, August 10, causing major disruption on the busy route.

Images obtained by Y News showed the aftermath of the collision, which involved a 14-seater matatu and several SUVs. The crash left extensive damage and brought traffic to a standstill as motorists struggled to navigate the affected section.

Several injured passengers were seen lying on the road, while others were trapped beneath mangled vehicle wreckage. Witnesses and passing motorists joined rescue efforts, helping to pull injured passengers from the vehicles as emergency teams responded.

The extent of the injuries and the total number of casualties had not been immediately established by the time of publication.

The Kenya Red Cross later confirmed that a mass casualty incident involving multiple vehicles had occurred at Kijabe along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway in Kiambu County.

“Rescue efforts are ongoing. Kenya Red Cross first responders are en route, with ambulances dispatched by @_SHAKenya Kenya already on scene,” the organisation said.

The confirmation came after initial images from the scene showed members of the public taking part in rescue efforts.

Authorities had yet to issue a detailed account of what caused the crash, while efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision were continuing.

Recent crashes raise highway safety concerns

The Kijabe accident comes less than a week after another multiple-vehicle collision caused significant disruption along the Mai Mahiu Escarpment Road on August 4.

That crash, according to witnesses, involved two trucks and a private vehicle at a sharp bend, completely blocking the highway and causing motorists to queue for kilometres.

Images from the scene showed extensively damaged vehicles and debris scattered across the road as members of the public rushed to assist those involved.

More details on the number of casualties and the circumstances of the Kijabe crash are expected as rescue and assessment operations continue.
