Media personality and digital creator Laura Mbatha has ignited a spirited online debate after declaring that truly good husbands deserve a second wife.
The NTV presenter made the remarks during a recent appearance on The Sandwich Podcast, where she shared her unconventional views on relationships, marriage and the role of men in society.
Mbatha argued that responsible, loving and capable men should be allowed to marry more than one wife because they can extend their care and protection to more women.
“For real, like, me, sasa husema, like, if you’re truly a good husband, you deserve a second wife. ‘Cause ata mimi, I want women to be protected. If I believe you are a good man, na nalike wasichana wote wa protect by this good man,” she said during the conversation.
Her comments quickly spread across social media platforms, with clips from the interview attracting thousands of reactions from Kenyans who either praised or criticized her perspective.
Mbatha explained that her opinion stems from a belief that genuinely good men are rare and that women deserve partners who can provide emotional support, stability and protection.
Rather than viewing marriage strictly through the lens of monogamy, she suggested that a dependable husband should be able to build more than one successful family if he has the emotional maturity, financial ability and willingness to treat each wife fairly.
Her remarks immediately divided opinion.
Some social media users agreed with her argument, saying consensual polygamy has existed in many African communities for generations and remains a legitimate family structure when entered into willingly by all parties.
The discussion has since evolved beyond Mbatha’s personal opinion, with many Kenyans debating whether traditional practices such as polygamy still have a place in contemporary society.
