NAIVASHA, Kenya — Traffic flow along the Maai Mahiu Escarpment on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway was severely disrupted on Monday after a road accident involving two trucks and a private vehicle left one truck blocking the roadway.
The Long-Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LODDCA) confirmed the incident in a traffic alert issued on August 4, saying the crash occurred along the escarpment section of the highway.
“There has been an accident along the Mai Mahiu escarpment involving two trucks and a private vehicle. One of the trucks has completely blocked the road,” the association said.
Motorists using the busy transport corridor were advised to expect significant delays as emergency responders and traffic officers worked to clear the scene.
By the time of publication, authorities had not released information regarding casualties or the cause of the accident.
Crash Scene Shows Extensive Damage
Videos circulating from the scene showed extensive damage to one of the trucks, particularly its cab, while a white saloon car was seen overturned near the roadside.
A silver private car also appeared badly damaged, with debris scattered across the carriageway.
The footage showed long queues of trucks and other vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway as traffic came to a standstill.
Several bystanders were seen near the crash site while emergency response efforts continued.
Foggy Conditions Reported
Witnesses at the scene reported foggy conditions along the steep escarpment section at the time of the crash, reducing visibility for motorists.
The Maai Mahiu escarpment is one of the most challenging sections of the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway because of its steep descent, sharp bends and heavy concentration of commercial vehicles.
Road safety experts have previously identified poor visibility, speeding, brake failure and driver fatigue as some of the factors that frequently contribute to serious crashes along the route.
Key Transport Corridor Frequently Affected
The Nairobi–Nakuru Highway forms part of the Northern Corridor, one of East Africa’s busiest transport routes linking the Port of Mombasa with western Kenya and neighbouring countries.
Accidents involving heavy commercial vehicles often lead to prolonged traffic disruptions because of the difficulty of removing damaged trucks from the narrow escarpment section.
Monday’s incident is the latest in a series of serious crashes reported along the highway in 2026, renewing concern over road safety and traffic management on the corridor.
Authorities had not announced when the blocked section would be fully reopened, and motorists were urged to exercise caution, follow police directions and consider alternative routes where possible as clearance operations continued.
