NAIROBI, Kenya — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a suspected drug trafficker following a dramatic road accident in Migori County that led to the recovery of bhang valued at over Sh34 million.
According to the DCI, the suspect, identified as Samson Ayiera Chacha, was driving a trailer (registration KBS 548H) on April 24, 2026, when he lost control and plunged into River Kuja.
Authorities said the 52-year-old sustained severe injuries in the crash and was rescued by members of the public, who rushed him to Migori County Referral Hospital for treatment, where he remains under police guard.
A subsequent recovery operation saw the submerged trailer retrieved from the river and towed to Kamagambo Police Station for inspection. Upon examination, officers discovered a large consignment of bhang concealed in the vehicle.
Anti-narcotics officers from Isebania were called in to take over the investigation and established that the trailer was transporting approximately 1,137.8 kilogrammes of the illegal substance, with an estimated street value of Sh34,134,000.
Police said the suspect will be formally charged once he is discharged from the hospital.
The seizure marks one of the significant narcotics recoveries in the region in recent months, highlighting ongoing trafficking routes through border counties.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, noting that community cooperation remains vital in disrupting trafficking networks.
