NAIROBI, Kenya- Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has assured Kenyans that the 2027 General Election will be peaceful, dismissing concerns that the country is headed towards electoral violence and urging citizens to remain confident in Kenya’s democratic institutions.
Speaking on Monday at State House, Nairobi, where President William Ruto hosted members of the Friends Church, commonly known as the Quakers, Mudavadi said Kenya has made significant progress in strengthening its democratic systems and expressed confidence that the next General Election would be conducted peacefully.
“There will be peaceful elections in Kenya, don’t be cheated. Kenya has maintained democratic principles, and President Ruto will uphold all those rights for all Kenyans,” Mudavadi said.
His remarks come amid heightened political activity as parties position themselves ahead of the August 10, 2027 General Election, with both the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition and opposition leaders intensifying campaigns across the country.
Mudavadi also described President Ruto as a longstanding friend of the Friends Church, recalling that one of the President’s earliest official church visits after assuming office was to Donholm Friends Church in Nairobi.
“Even when he took over leadership, the first church here in Nairobi where he went for prayers was Donholm Friends. He went to the church of Friends, so he’s a friend of Friends,” he said.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary, who is a member of the Friends Church, appealed to fellow congregants to support President Ruto’s bid for a second term, saying they should evaluate the Head of State based on his leadership record and development agenda.
Mudavadi said members of the Friends Church are guided by principles of honesty, integrity and faithfulness, values he said should also shape political leadership and national unity.
“Mr President, as a Quakerman, when I went to take the oath of office, I raised my hand and the people who did not understand who the Quakers were asked, ‘Is Mr Mudavadi an atheist?’ I told them no, no. I’m not an atheist, that is our tradition,” he said.
During the gathering, Mudavadi asked members of the congregation whether they would support President Ruto’s re-election, prompting an affirmative response accompanied by applause.
“These people have affirmed they shall work with you, they shall defend this Kenya, they shall maintain peace, and they shall seek justice for all,” he said.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary’s comments come at a time when political leaders have continued to debate the country’s preparedness for the 2027 elections, with concerns over political rhetoric, electoral reforms and coalition realignments dominating national discourse.
The election is expected to be fiercely contested as opposition leaders seek to unite behind a common presidential candidate to challenge President Ruto, while Kenya Kwanza leaders continue to defend the administration’s development record and rally support for a second term.
Beyond traditional political campaigns, digital platforms have increasingly become central to shaping public opinion, with parties and political leaders using social media to mobilise supporters, communicate policy positions and influence national conversations ahead of the polls.
Despite the intensifying political competition, Mudavadi maintained that Kenya’s democratic institutions remain strong and capable of delivering a peaceful electoral process, urging citizens not to be swayed by narratives predicting instability.
He said preserving peace, protecting democratic freedoms and respecting constitutional rights should remain the responsibility of all leaders and citizens as the country prepares for the next General Election.
