Nairobi in Race to Host Liverpool vs Barcelona Pre-Season Clash

Date:

Football fans in Kenya could be in line for one of the biggest sporting spectacles ever hosted in the country, with Liverpool FC reportedly exploring a high-profile pre-season friendly against Barcelona in Nairobi on August 8, 2026.

The proposed clash would form part of both clubs’ preparations for the 2026/27 campaign and has already generated excitement among supporters across Africa.

While the fixture has not been officially confirmed, reports indicate Barcelona are weighing Nairobi as one of two key options to conclude their summer plans.

According to emerging details, Barcelona are planning a 15-day pre-season training camp in Birmingham, England, beginning in late July. Following that camp, the Spanish giants are considering two final tour scenarios.

One option would see Hansi Flick’s side travel to Nairobi for a glamour tie against Liverpool on August 8. The second alternative is a fixture in Morocco against local opposition on August 5.

Club executives reportedly view the Kenya proposal as highly attractive due to the global appeal of both teams and the chance to strengthen their international commercial presence in Africa.

For Liverpool, the opportunity would also provide manager Arne Slot with a competitive test against elite opposition as he continues shaping his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Nairobi has grown into one of Africa’s strongest sports markets, with football support in Kenya among the most passionate on the continent.

Both Liverpool and Barcelona enjoy massive fan bases locally, making the city a commercially appealing destination.

A Liverpool vs Barcelona match in Nairobi would likely attract thousands of travelling fans from East Africa while also drawing global media attention.

Kenya has long been seen as a football-loving nation with huge support for European clubs, but opportunities to watch top-tier teams live have been rare. Hosting two of Europe’s biggest clubs would therefore be historic.

The last competitive meeting between Liverpool and Barcelona came in the unforgettable 2019 UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Barcelona won the first leg 3-0 at Camp Nou, but Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks in European football history by winning 4-0 at Anfield to progress 4-3 on aggregate.

That dramatic tie remains one of the most iconic modern clashes between the two clubs, adding even more intrigue to any potential reunion in Nairobi.
