Pastor Pius Muiru Faces Auction Over Sh216 Million Loan Dispute

Date:

Televangelist Pius Muiru is facing the possible auction of prime property after a long-running loan dispute with Equity Bank escalated, placing assets worth hundreds of millions of shillings at risk.

The Maximum Miracle Centre preacher is battling to save property valued at approximately Sh 960 million, which had been used as collateral for a Sh 216 million loan taken more than a decade ago.

The financial dispute dates back to 2010, when Muiru secured the loan facility from Equity Bank. Like many large-scale commercial loans, the facility was backed by real estate assets.

Over the years, however, the loan is said to have become non-performing, with accumulated interest and penalties significantly inflating the outstanding amount.

This has prompted the lender to initiate recovery proceedings, including the potential auction of the secured property.

While the exact current outstanding figure has not been publicly disclosed, the bank’s move to auction suggests that repayment efforts have either stalled or failed to meet agreed terms.

At the centre of the dispute is prime Nairobi land reportedly tied to Muiru’s ministry and business interests. The property, valued at nearly a billion shillings was pledged as security when the loan was taken.

Muiru has since moved to court in a last-ditch effort to stop the auction of his property.

Muiru has filed a case aimed at stopping the impending auction, arguing that the move by the lender should be halted as the dispute is resolved through the courts.

Muiru rose to national prominence in the early 2000s through his televangelism work and the popular Maximum Miracle Melodies brand. His ministry attracted a large following, bolstered by extensive media presence and high-profile crusades.

At the height of his influence, he was considered among Kenya’s most visible and commercially successful pastors, blending faith, media, and enterprise into a powerful platform.
