NAIROBI, Kenya — The 60,000-seat Raila Odinga International Stadium is nearing completion and is expected to become Kenya’s flagship venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo.
In an update shared on Friday, Omollo said the ultra-modern facility being constructed at the historic Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road has entered its final phase of development, with major structural works already completed.
The remaining works are focused on installing information and communication technology systems, broadcast infrastructure and spectator facilities ahead of commissioning.
“The Raila Odinga International Stadium is nearing completion ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where it is expected to serve as Kenya’s flagship venue in the continental showpiece,” Omollo said.
Designed for International Competition
The stadium has been purpose-built for football and rugby and is intended to meet international standards required for major continental tournaments.
According to Omollo, the design prioritises spectator experience, with seating stands positioned close to the field of play to enhance visibility and atmosphere during matches.
The facility forms a key component of Kenya’s preparations to co-host the 2027 AFCON tournament alongside regional partners.
Kenya has embarked on an ambitious programme to upgrade sports infrastructure as part of commitments made to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ahead of the tournament.
Inspired by Maasai Heritage
One of the most distinctive features of the stadium is its architectural design, which draws inspiration from traditional Maasai shields and spears.
The project also incorporates modern sustainability and technology features, reflecting the government’s vision of creating a world-class sporting facility.
According to Omollo, the stadium includes a hybrid playing surface, smart technology systems, solar energy installations, and rainwater harvesting infrastructure.
The combination of modern engineering and cultural symbolism is intended to create a landmark venue capable of hosting international sporting events while showcasing Kenyan identity.
Security and Operations Planning Underway
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is overseeing preparations to ensure the facility is ready for large-scale international events.
Omollo said the department is coordinating multi-agency efforts involving security planning, emergency response systems, and crowd management frameworks.
“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to play a critical role in creating the enabling environment necessary for the successful delivery and future operation of the facility,” he said.
Preparations include developing event security strategies and operational protocols required for a stadium expected to host tens of thousands of spectators during international tournaments.
Key Pillar of AFCON Preparations
The completion of the stadium is expected to mark a significant milestone in Kenya’s preparations for AFCON 2027.
Government officials view the project as more than a sporting facility, positioning it as a national asset capable of boosting tourism, creating jobs, and enhancing Kenya’s profile as a destination for international sporting events.
