NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Police Service (NPS) has arrested and arraigned 90 suspected members of organised criminal gangs as security agencies intensify operations to dismantle criminal networks and restore public safety across the Coast region.
The suspects were arrested over the past two weeks through intelligence-led operations targeting individuals believed to be involved in activities threatening the security of residents.
According to the NPS, officers conducted coordinated surveillance and enforcement operations in identified crime hotspots before apprehending the suspects and presenting them before court to face various charges.
Intelligence-Led Operations
Police said the ongoing operation forms part of a broader strategy to disrupt organised criminal gangs and improve security in affected areas.
The service noted that security officers have maintained an active presence in the region as investigations continue and efforts to identify additional suspects gather pace.
“The operation remains ongoing,” the NPS said, adding that officers will continue pursuing criminal networks operating within the Coast region.
Crackdown Follows Ruto’s Directive
The latest arrests come days after President William Ruto directed security agencies to intensify the fight against goonism and other forms of organised crime following recent incidents of political violence, including those witnessed during the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election in Nyandarua County.
Speaking at State House on July 21 during the unveiling of the New National Vision: Journey to a First World Economy, Ruto called on law enforcement agencies to deal firmly with criminal gangs while operating within the law.
“And then we have goons. And then, I don’t know whether we want to say again, these are our children, the goons. So, you know, we really need to have a candid conversation,” the President said.
Growing Concern Over Organised Crime
The police operation also comes amid increasing concern over reported cases of goonism and organised criminal activity in different parts of the country.
Church leaders, community organisations and political leaders have recently called for tougher action to curb violence, protect lives and property, and maintain public order.
Security experts have similarly warned that organised criminal gangs continue to pose a significant threat to communities through acts of violence, intimidation and other criminal activities.
Public Urged to Support Police
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led policing, saying operations against organised crime will continue while ensuring enforcement actions comply with the law and respect constitutional rights.
The service also appealed to members of the public to work closely with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities, noting that community cooperation remains critical in preventing criminal gangs from regrouping and strengthening efforts to improve public safety.
