Video: Khalwale Says He Held Four-Hour Meeting with Matiang’i on 2027 Bid

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has disclosed that he held a four-hour closed-door discussion with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who is positioning himself for a presidential run in 2027.

Speaking in Nyamira County, Senator Khalwale said the meeting focused on Matiang’i’s vision for an “efficient and corruption-free” government should he succeed President William Ruto.

“I am a true friend of Matiang’i,” Khalwale told a gathering. “When he announced that he wants to become President, we met for four hours. Matiang’i told me many things. You turned me when you said you have a dream that within two years you will apply brutal government efficiency.”

He added that such a system would mean zero tolerance for corruption — a standard he argued is currently lacking.

“The same way you see our President talking about Singapore, but he doesn’t know. Because his Cabinet Secretaries are thieves,” he said, in one of his strongest public criticisms yet of the administration he campaigned for.

Khalwale is a senior member of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), but his recent remarks suggest growing frustration.

He has openly complained of being sidelined as other leaders from Western Kenya, including those from rival parties, secured influential positions in President Ruto’s government.

At the Nyamira event, the senator urged Matiang’i to work closely with Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya — a fierce critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration and a senior figure in the United Opposition coalition.

The Senator’s latest comments will likely heighten political tension within UDA as alliances continue to shift ahead of the next election cycle.
