Governor Wanga Accepts Deputy’s Resignation, Says He Focused on Political Ambitions

Date:

HOMA BAY, Kenya — Gladys Wanga has accepted the resignation of her deputy, Oyugi Magwanga, formally declaring the position vacant with effect from February 26, 2026.

In a statement issued Friday, Wanga confirmed she had received Magwanga’s resignation letter dated February 26.

She invoked Article 181(1) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and Section 32C(b) of the County Governments Act, 2012, in announcing the vacancy.

“Pursuant to Article 181(1) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and Section 32C(b) of the County Governments Act, 2012, I hereby declare the Office of the Deputy Governor, Homa Bay County, vacant with effect from 26th February 2026,” Wanga said.

The governor assured residents that county operations would continue uninterrupted and that the vacancy would be filled in accordance with the law.

Under Article 182 of the Constitution and Section 32D of the County Governments Act, a governor is required to nominate a new deputy within 14 days, subject to approval by the county assembly.

“Service delivery remains uninterrupted, and the vacancy in the Office of the Deputy Governor will be addressed in accordance with the law,” she added.

Wanga stated that during Magwanga’s tenure, her administration facilitated his constitutional mandate and appointed him as County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Livestock Development.

However, she claimed his growing political ambitions affected his focus on official duties.

“The people of Homa Bay are entitled to full-time, undivided service from their executive leadership,” Wanga said.

“It is also in public record that he opposed the ODM candidate in the Kasipul by-election. This decision raised legitimate concerns about the unity of purpose and commitment to our shared mandate.”

Magwanga resigned on Thursday, maintaining that he leaves office with integrity intact.

“I leave office with my conscience clear and my commitment to the people of Homa Bay unwavering,” he said.

He added that his exit does not diminish his stance on accountability and prudent resource management.

“My resolve to advocate for integrity, proper management of public resources, and the fulfillment of the aspirations of our county remains stronger than ever,” Magwanga stated.
