NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya is taking a significant step towards sustainability by phasing out over 13,000 fuel-injected motorcycles used by chiefs and their assistants, replacing them with electric ones.
Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo announced this eco-friendly initiative aimed at boosting mobility and service efficiency at the grassroots level.
Speaking from his Harambee House office during the launch of the pilot project, Dr. Omollo emphasized the critical role of chiefs in combating climate change.
“By using electric motorcycles, our administrators are not only improving service delivery but also significantly contributing to our climate action efforts,” he stated.
The first batch of 22 electric motorcycles will benefit administrators in Kajiado, Kiambu, Machakos, and Nairobi, marking the beginning of a broader rollout.
Enhancing Service Delivery and Environmental Impact
This initiative is designed to enhance the efficiency of National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) by addressing transport challenges and promoting sustainable solutions.
The project, initially covering 22 locations across four counties, is set to expand nationwide within a month. Priority will be given to large, remote counties facing security challenges to ensure smooth e-mobility for officers.
Dr. Omollo highlighted the broader vision of equipping police officers and NGAOs with electric vehicles in the future, noting the current shortage of field vehicles and motorcycles.
This transition not only aims to streamline operations but also to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thus tackling air pollution head-on.
Training and Future Expansion
To ensure the effective use of these electric motorcycles, officers will undergo comprehensive training on their operation and maintenance.
Dr. Omollo also mentioned plans for regular refresher courses to keep the officers updated on best practices.
He encouraged the private sector to join the green movement by investing in electric motorcycles.
