NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenyan media industry is reeling from yet another heartbreaking loss following the death of veteran radio host Edward Kwach.
The 44-year-old passed away on the night of Monday, April 28, 2025, while undergoing treatment for meningitis at Coptic Hospital in Nairobi.
According to a statement from his family, Kwach—affectionately known as “Carey” by those close to him—succumbed to a short illness after weeks of hospitalization.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother… while receiving treatment for meningitis,” the statement read.
Earlier this month, Kenyans from all walks of life were urged to donate blood as the charismatic radio host’s condition deteriorated, triggering a wave of national support.
A Radio Trailblazer With a Soulful Voice
Kwach’s unmistakable voice was more than just soundwaves through the FM dial—it was comfort, charisma, and cultural commentary rolled into one. Until his passing, he was a host at Spice FM, a station under the Standard Media Group.
But his career spanned far more than one station. He first pursued law before transitioning to radio in the early 2000s—a move that turned out to be the start of an iconic career.
From Capital FM to Kiss FM, Homeboyz Radio, EA FM, Nation FM, and even Urban Radio in Kisumu, Kwach left a piece of himself in every frequency.
Listeners especially remember his time co-hosting the breakfast show at Urban Radio with Chris Okinda and Brian Oduor, where his sharp wit and deep empathy set him apart.
A Candid Look at Fame, Struggles, and Redemption
Kwach never shied away from vulnerability, a rare quality in the world of showbiz. In a deeply personal letter he wrote to his younger self in 2021, he laid bare the toll that fame, ego, and alcohol had taken on his career.
“There are things that will happen to you during your stint at Radio Africa that will change everything… daft things involving alcohol and hubris,” he wrote.
The letter, which has since resurfaced following his passing, reads like a poignant cautionary tale.
He spoke of job losses, regrets, and nights spent in police cells—all while being the most sought-after voice in town. Yet amid the setbacks, Kwach also celebrated the commercial success and loyal fanbase that his authenticity had earned him.
A Life Beyond the Microphone
Outside the studio, Kwach had found love and stability with his longtime partner, Dee Muigai, a former model and entrepreneur.
The two got engaged in 2014, marking a new chapter in his often-public journey.
As news of his death continues to send shockwaves through the industry, tributes have poured in from fellow journalists, former colleagues, and fans alike—each remembering the laughter, wisdom, and warmth he shared both on and off-air.
