MACHACHOS, Kenya — Former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has urged President William Ruto to stop pursuing Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, saying the former vice president is “not available” to join the government.
Speaking during a rally in Matuu, Machakos County, on Monday, Gachagua accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of being obsessed with wooing Kalonzo into its fold despite clear signs that the opposition coalition remains united.
“Ruto ridiculed Kalonzo, saying he is a mere dengu farmer. I want to tell him to leave Kalonzo alone. He is not available for you,” Gachagua said.
A heartfelt thank you to the people of Machakos and Kitui Counties for graciously hosting us. We sincerely appreciate your warmth and support.Together, we are committed to working hand in hand towards building a better Kenya.
His remarks came days after he declared himself the “official spokesperson” of the opposition alliance he now refers to as the United Opposition Brigade.
“We have come here as a family of cousins. I am the spokesman of this family. You go and find your own family,” he told the crowd.
Kalundu Market in Kitui Town was truly ecstatic. This significance stands as a clear indication that the people of Kenya are ready to move forward, united and resolute. The people of Kenya are affirming that the supremacy of the people shall always prevail over any other
During a church service in Mutituni, Gachagua added that if President Ruto wanted to reach Kalonzo, he should go through him directly.
“Stop sending brokers to look for Kalonzo. If you want to speak to him, come and see me. We have sat with Kalonzo, with leaders from Ukambani, Mt Kenya, Meru and Embu, and for now, I’ve been told I’m the family’s spokesman,” he said.
The former deputy president’s comments come amid renewed overtures by top Kenya Kwanza figures to court the Wiper leader ahead of the 2027 elections.
Last week, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki told grassroots leaders from Kitui County that the government had not given up on winning over Kalonzo, describing him as a “noble man” who had fallen into the company of divisive politicians.
“Kalonzo is a decent man and a scholar, but he has aligned himself with people promoting sectarianism. I have not given up on him,” Kindiki said.
A heartfelt thank you to the people of Katangi and Kwa-Vonza in Machakos and Kitui Counties for your warm greetings. We are committed to working tirelessly alongside you, ensuring that we never let you down and continually strive for the betterment of our beloved Kenya.
Kalonzo, for his part, has publicly denied holding talks with Ruto, saying Wiper was not interested in joining what he called the “Broadbase government.”
The mounting political tussle over Kalonzo underscores the growing rivalry between President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza camp and Gachagua’s emerging opposition bloc, which is positioning itself as a unified alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.
