NAIROBI, Kenya – Celebrated media personality Janet Mbugua officially announced her departure from Nation Media Group (NMG) on April 17, 2026, bringing to a close her 14-month stint as co-host of NTV’s morning show Fixing the Nation.

Her exit marks the end of what many saw as a highly anticipated comeback to mainstream media, following an eight-year break after leaving Citizen TV in 2017.

When she returned to screens in early 2025, Mbugua joined NTV alongside Eric Latiff and Mariam Bishar to launch Fixing the Nation on February 3, a four-hour morning show built around governance, accountability and public discourse.

Announcing her exit, NTV shared a farewell message on social media, writing, “Today we say goodbye to one of our day ones.”

The programme quickly carved out a niche, leaning heavily on investigative journalism and expert analysis, and even earned recognition in the 2026 book Beyond the Ballot by Gina Din for pushing for transparency in government communication.

For Janet Mbugua, the role went beyond broadcasting, it aligned closely with her long-standing advocacy work.

She described the opportunity as a “natural fit,” saying it allowed her to bring an “active citizen lens” to a mainstream platform at a time when public engagement and civic awareness were at the forefront of national conversations.

Her return to television had followed years away from the newsroom, during which she focused on raising her family and expanding her impact through social initiatives.

Before her break, she had built a strong reputation at Citizen TV, where she anchored prime-time news alongside Hussein Mohamed, who now serves as State House Spokesperson.

Beyond media, Mbugua has remained deeply involved in social impact work through her Inua Dada Foundation, which has distributed over 17,000 sanitary pads and mobilised more than 100,000 youth advocates to support girls in schools.

She has also played a role in shaping policy, successfully filing a motion in Parliament aimed at improving Kenya’s Menstrual Health Management framework and access to essential services for women and girls.

Despite her departure, Mbugua has not yet revealed her next move. However, she signed off on April 17 with gratitude, thanking viewers for walking the journey with her during her time at NMG.

Her latest exit leaves behind a show that sought to challenge systems and spark conversation.
