Waita, who served under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, announced his new role on Wednesday via social media, expressing his enthusiasm for the opportunity.
“It is my honour today to announce that I have joined the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change as Managing Director – Africa Advisory,” he said.
A seasoned professional with a rich career spanning law, telecommunications, public service, and politics, Waita’s professional journey reflects an ability to adapt and excel across sectors.
He began his career in legal practice before joining Safaricom PLC, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s reputation as one of Africa’s most admired brands during a 14-year tenure.
In 2015, Waita transitioned to public service, joining President Kenyatta’s administration as a key political advisor and later rising to Chief of Staff.
His role involved bridging political promises with effective governmental execution, a responsibility he described as both transformative and rewarding.
Following his eight-year tenure in government, Waita ventured into elective politics in 2022, contesting the Machakos County governorship.
Despite narrowly losing to Wavinya Ndeti, he reflected on the experience as pivotal to his growth.
“It was a life-changing experience,” Waita said. “I came close, but not close enough to win. It did, however, re-ignite my desire to improve myself as a leader for the future.”
In his new international role, Waita will work alongside a team committed to supporting political leaders across Africa and beyond to execute their mandates effectively.
He highlighted the importance of technology and efficient government design in achieving meaningful results.
“I will be privileged to work alongside kindred spirits, a team of like-minded thinkers, doers, and trusted advisors,” he said.
The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change focuses on supporting governments and leaders worldwide to deliver transformative change, leveraging technology, governance expertise, and policy solutions.
Waita’s appointment reinforces the organization’s commitment to Africa’s political and economic development.
