NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a nationwide weather alert, warning residents to prepare for a mix of rains, hot afternoons, cold nights, and strong winds over the final week of August.
According to the department, showers are expected to persist over the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and parts of North-western Kenya, though both the intensity and coverage of rainfall are likely to ease compared to previous weeks.
Intermittent cloudiness and cooler temperatures are also forecast for the Central Highlands, South-eastern Lowlands, Western Kenya, and the Rift Valley, limiting morning sunshine in these areas.
Residents in North-eastern and North-western Kenya should brace for highs exceeding 30°C during the afternoons, while chilly nights—with temperatures possibly dropping below 10°C—are expected in the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mount Kilimanjaro.
The Met further cautioned that strong southerly to south-easterly winds, blowing at speeds above 25 knots (12.86 m/s), are likely along the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, and the South-eastern Lowlands, as well as in North-eastern and North-western regions.
Coastal and semi-arid communities have been urged to remain alert for wind-related disruptions.
Farmers and herders were specifically advised to take note of these changing weather conditions, which could affect agricultural activities and livestock management.
KMD stressed the importance of vigilance in adapting to shifting temperatures and rainfall patterns to minimise impacts on daily life and livelihoods.
