Police Officer Killed, Two Rifles Stolen in Kakamega Night Attack

NAIROBI, Kenya- A police officer has died following a violent night attack at Nyaleya Patrol Base under Musanda Police Station in Mumias West Sub-County, Kakamega County.

According to a police report filed under OB No. 15/27/02/2026 at 2100hrs and seen by Y News, the incident occurred at around 8:50 pm on February 27, 2026. 

Police Constable Brian Kipngetich reported that while inside his house within the patrol base, he heard commotion at the report office followed by gunshots. 

As he stepped out to check, another gunshot rang out and a bullet struck him on the left side of the head as he ran back into his house.

The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Musanda rushed to the scene at Mukhuwa Location, approximately 13 kilometres south-east of the station, with a team of officers.

At the scene, No. 64094 Corporal Richard Utolo was found unconscious in a pool of blood inside the office with a visible wound on his chin.

 PC Kipngetich sustained a head injury, while PC Finace Abura suffered a wound to the left ear. 

Abura’s wife, Mary Omondi, also sustained injuries to the head and right hand during the attack.

The injured officers and civilians were rushed to Bungoma West Hospital and admitted for treatment. 

However, in a follow-up report, police confirmed that Corporal Richard Utolo succumbed to his injuries on February 28, 2026, at around 2:03 am. 

His body has been moved to Life Care Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

During the incident, two G3 rifles, serial numbers G3 AP J52842 and G3 FMP 392287, each loaded with 20 rounds of 7.62×51mm ammunition, were stolen.

Police have launched a manhunt for the attackers and are searching for the missing firearms.

 Investigations into the robbery with violence and the killing of the officer are ongoing.
