NCA Names 9th Street Plaza Ltd as Developer of Collapsed Eastleigh Building

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The National Construction Authority (NCA) has named the developer, contractor and professionals on record for the building that collapsed on 9th Street in Eastleigh, Nairobi, as rescue teams continue searching the site.

In a statement issued on Friday, the authority Acting Executive Director and Registrar of Contractors, Quantity Surveyor Susan Rutto said the project was registered on July 30, 2025, as a proposed development on Land Reference Number 36/II/40, 9th Street, Eastleigh, in Kamukunji Sub-County.

She said the developer on record is 9th Street Plaza Limited, while Stromax Holdings E.A Limited is listed as the contractor.

The NCA identified architect Emmanuel Mwangi Maina as the project architect and engineer Joseph Muturi Mugu as the structural engineer.

The authority provided the project registration number as 53128815710410.

It did not give further details about the building’s construction history, inspections or compliance status in the statement.

The 18-storey building, which was still under construction, collapsed on Friday in the busy Eastleigh commercial area.

The cause had not been established, and authorities said investigations were under way.

Multi-agency response at scene

The NCA said the site had been cordoned off and a multi-agency team was coordinating rescue operations and conducting preliminary investigations.

“The immediate priority is the safety of the public,” the statement said.

The authority urged members of the public to keep away from the affected area and from any cordoned-off zones.

It said further information on the rescue operation, the condition of the site and actions being taken would be provided in due course.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen earlier said 67 workers were at the site when the building collapsed.

One was injured, while 66 escaped unharmed.

He also said about 11 people believed to have been in shops in the basement and on the ground floor were yet to be accounted for.

Murkomen said police and the Kenya Defence Forces had been deployed to support the rescue effort.

He said the government’s immediate focus was reaching anyone trapped beneath the rubble and expressed hope that they would be found alive.

The CS said investigators would establish what caused the collapse and cautioned against drawing conclusions about the building’s integrity before the inquiry was complete.

The authority said preliminary investigations were ongoing, while details about the site and the response would be released later.

The collapse has renewed public attention on the regulation of construction projects and the safety of people working or operating businesses at building sites.
