NAIROBI, Kenya — Residents of Mwea can now access a range of government services closer to home following the commissioning of a new Huduma Centre in Ngurubani, Kirinyaga County.
The facility was officially commissioned on Friday, September 18, by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during his visit to Mwea.
The centre had already opened its doors to residents earlier in 2026 and is the 61st Huduma Centre in Kenya and the second in Kirinyaga County after the facility in Kerugoya. Huduma Kenya says the Mwea centre serves residents of Mwea East and Mwea West sub-counties.
Residents to access services closer to home
The new facility is expected to reduce the need for residents to travel to Kerugoya and Embu to access government services.
Among the services available are applications and replacement of identity documents, birth and death certificates, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) services and pension-related inquiries.
Huduma Kenya has also listed services including National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) services, registration of persons and Social Health Authority (SHA) registration among the services available at the centre.
The facility brings multiple government services together under one roof, potentially reducing both the time and transport costs incurred by residents seeking public services outside the constituency.
Kindiki: Government services must be accessible
Speaking during the commissioning, Kindiki said the facility was intended to make government services more accessible to residents.
“Government services must be accessible to the people. The establishment of the Mwea Huduma Centre brings essential services closer to residents, saving them time and the cost of travelling long distances,” Kindiki said.
The Deputy President’s remarks echoed the wider Huduma Kenya model of providing integrated government services through one-stop centres.
Huduma Kenya describes its programme as a government initiative aimed at providing citizens with efficient and integrated access to public services.
Jitume ICT Hub targets young people
The Mwea facility also houses a Jitume ICT Hub, providing young people with access to digital skills training and opportunities in the digital economy.
The hub is expected to support skills development in areas such as content creation, web design, transcription and freelance work.
The addition of the ICT hub gives the facility a role beyond conventional government service delivery by providing a space where young people can develop digital skills and explore online work opportunities.
Mary Maingi pushed for the centre
Mwea MP Mary Maingi said she had pushed for the establishment of the centre after residents raised concerns about having to travel outside the constituency to access some government services.
“For a long time, our people have had to travel outside Mwea to access services that should be available closer to home. Today, we are seeing that change. This centre will save our people time and money while making government services more accessible,” Maingi said.
The centre is expected to particularly benefit residents of Mwea East and Mwea West, who can now access a range of services within the constituency.
Mwea centre becomes Kenya’s 61st
The Mwea facility brings the total number of Huduma Centres across Kenya to 61, according to Huduma Kenya’s official platform.
It is the second centre in Kirinyaga County, complementing the existing facility in Kerugoya.
The official Huduma Kenya service platform lists the Mwea centre as operating from 8 am to 5 pm, while its broader network includes centres with extended operating hours.
Push to decentralise government services
The establishment of the Mwea Huduma Centre is part of the government’s broader effort to decentralise public services and make them available closer to citizens.
For residents who previously travelled to other towns for government documentation, tax-related services and other public services, the centre provides a single local point of access.
The opening also comes as the government expands the use of digital and integrated service-delivery platforms, with Huduma Kenya reporting more than 13 million citizens served through its network and 61 centres countrywide.
