Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has stepped in to support comedian Stellah Jemutai Koitie, popularly known as Jemutai Comedian, days after her 11th-anniversary event in Eldoret failed to attract the turnout she had hoped for.
Sudi revealed that he had met Jemutai after being moved by her emotional appeal on social media, where she opened up about the challenges she faced following the poorly attended event.
In a statement shared on his social media accounts, the MP said Jemutai’s decision to deactivate her social media accounts after the appeal also prompted him to reach out.
“Following her emotional appeal on social media, I was moved by Stellah Jemutai Koitie, alias Jemutai Comedian – Chibambe, who had even deactivated her social media accounts,” Sudi wrote.
Sudi said he subsequently made a point of meeting the comedian to offer his support and discuss how the creative industry could benefit from greater opportunities.
“Today, I made a point of meeting her to offer my support in my own small way, to help her get back on her feet and to explore how we can take creative arts and stand-up comedy to the next level,” he added.
The legislator also used the meeting to highlight his commitment to supporting Kenyan creatives, saying artists should have sustainable platforms through which they can earn a living from their talent.
“As a patron, we are determined to create a platform for our creatives so they can earn a decent living and build a foundation for the next generation,” Sudi said.
Sudi’s intervention comes after Jemutai experienced a difficult period following her anniversary event in Eldoret.
The comedian had organised the event to mark 11 years in the entertainment industry but was left disappointed after the turnout fell below expectations.
The situation reportedly left her facing financial pressure, with outstanding obligations to creatives and service providers involved in the event.
Jemutai subsequently took to social media to express her disappointment and appeal for assistance.
Her emotional appeal also came amid frustration over the absence of some leaders and other individuals whom she expected to support the event.
The comedian later deactivated her social media accounts, further raising concern among her fans.
The MP also used the opportunity to advocate for stronger structures to support Kenya’s creative industry.
